Feather flag vs teardrop flag: which shape to order

Choose a feather flag when the artwork is a word that runs down the flag; choose a teardrop when it is a logo that needs width. In Senior Flags’ standard sets, at the same pole size, the feather flag is 34 to 60 cm (13 to 24 in) taller and the teardrop 25 to 50 cm (10 to 20 in) wider, measured on the flag itself.

What is a feather flag, and what is a teardrop flag?

A feather flag is a tall, narrow flag with a curved top edge, sleeved along one long side onto a sectional pole with flexible fiberglass sections. A teardrop flag has a rounded top that narrows to a point at the bottom. Both are also sold as feather banners or teardrop banners.

Other sellers also offer blade, knife, swooper and bowhead outlines. Our catalog lists two pole-mounted advertising shapes, feather and teardrop. Both are sold as sets, typically a printed flag, a sectional pole and a base, with the contents confirmed on the quotation; feather flags are also sold as flag-only prints.

Feather vs teardrop flag sizes at the same pole size

Senior Flags makes both shapes for four of the same pole sizes. On each one the feather flag is taller and the teardrop is wider:

The 5.0 m size is feather-only (375 × 75 cm) and the 4 m size is teardrop-only (240 × 108 cm). The full size lists are on our feather flag and teardrop flag pages.

Measured by its outer rectangle, the teardrop is the bigger flag at every shared pole size. At 4.5 m the 290 × 110 cm teardrop fills a 3.19 m² (34 sq ft) rectangle and the 340 × 70 cm feather 2.38 m² (26 sq ft), about 34% more. The gap is 25% at 2.8 and 3.4 m and 39% at 5.5 m. That runs against Signs.com, which says teardrop flags “offer less printable space”. Both shapes lose some of the rectangle to their curves, so compare the cut outlines on each template and proof rather than the shape names.

Flag outlines drawn to scale from our 4.5 m pole sizes. Poles and standing height are not shown.

How tall a flag is compared with its width decides the layout more than its size does. On a feather flag, a short word set vertically fills the height. A logo can be no wider than the flag, which is 70 cm (27.6 in) on the 4.5 m size, so it ends up small against a 340 cm flag. On a teardrop the widest part is near the rounded top, and on the 4.5 m size it is 110 cm (43.3 in) across, enough for a logo block with a short line underneath.

One file will not fit both shapes. Supply artwork for each shape, and ask for a proof on the exact outline before printing.

Bases and poles

Both shapes are offered with the same base options, chosen by the surface. On grass or soil, use a ground spike or a ground drill. On hard, flat surfaces, use a cross base or a flat base. For extra stability, put a water bag on a cross base; the bag travels empty and is filled on site. The base is chosen per set and listed on the quotation. We have not wind-tested either shape and publish no wind rating for them.

Each of our flags is finished to fit the pole sold with it. Our separate pole kits come in 3.4, 4.5 and 5.5 m, with fiberglass top sections and aluminum lower sections, from 50 sets, with production in 20 to 25 calendar days from artwork confirmation, excluding shipping: see feather flag poles and bases. Before moving a flag of one shape onto a pole that carried the other, send us the pole size and a photo of the top section.

Indoors and in still air

Sellers recommend the two shapes for different conditions. Signs.com lists the feather flag for “Indoor and outdoor with no or minimal wind” and the teardrop for “Indoor and outdoor, including locations with gusty winds”. Our product pages list trade shows and exhibitions among the uses for both shapes. Under a low ceiling, start from our shortest sets: both use a 2.8 m pole, with a 200 × 50 cm feather or a 166 × 75 cm teardrop. To show a teardrop from a wall, a teardrop wall bracket is listed with our wall-mounted flagpoles.

Where each shape is used

Our product pages list largely the same uses for both: retail and storefront promotion, events and exhibitions, sports events and roadside advertising. The teardrop page adds car dealerships. Because the uses overlap, the artwork and the space usually decide, as in the table at the top.

Ordering feather or teardrop flags

Senior Flags has made flags since 2003, and both shapes are printed and sewn at our factory in Lu’an, Anhui, on 110 gsm knitted polyester as standard (other fabrics are in what flags are made of), by digital or silk screen printing, on one side or both. A double-sided teardrop is two layers of that fabric with an interlayer.

The MOQ is 10 sets per product. Samples take 5 to 7 calendar days and bulk production 15 to 20 calendar days, both counted from artwork confirmation and excluding shipping; see custom flag MOQ and lead times.

Product details are on the custom feather flags and custom teardrop flags pages.

Frequently asked questions

Can I order feather flags without poles?

Yes. Senior Flags sells feather flags as flag-only prints as well as complete sets. For teardrop flags without poles, ask when you request a quote.

Teardrop flag vs feather flag: which is better in wind?

Signs.com says “the teardrop flag will thrive better in windy locations”. We have not tested either shape and make no claim either way. For hard ground we list a cross base, a flat base, or a cross base with a water bag for extra stability.

Which costs more, a feather flag or a teardrop flag?

We don’t publish prices; ask for both shapes on one quote. At the same pole size, our teardrop’s outer rectangle is 25 to 39% larger than the feather’s.

How long do feather flags last?

We publish no lifespan figure. It depends on wind, sun and how many hours the flag flies, and feather flags can be reordered as flag-only prints for poles you already have.

Can I mix feather and teardrop flags in one order?

Yes, as two products. Each starts at 10 sets, and whether an order can be split further across sizes or designs is confirmed on the quotation.
