The standard US flag size is 3 × 5 ft, exactly 91.44 × 152.4 cm.

  • At Senior Flags: made as 90 × 150 cm unless an order asks for the exact imperial size
  • Other common sizes: 2 × 3, 4 × 6, 5 × 8 and 6 × 10 ft
  • Federal proportion: most sizes in Executive Order 10834 use a longer 1:1.9
  • Retail proportions: 2:3, 3:5 or 5:8

What are standard flag dimensions in feet and centimeters?

Common US flag sizes run from 2 × 3 ft (61 × 91.4 cm) to 6 × 10 ft, and Senior Flags makes most of them in a rounded metric size.

The chart lists the US retail sizes, their exact metric dimensions and the metric size Senior Flags produces for each. Feet are converted at exactly 0.3048 m, the international foot (NIST), and rounded to 0.1 cm.

Feet converted at exactly 0.3048 m (NIST) and rounded to 0.1 cm. “Size we make” is our standard metric size.

We also make 200 × 300 cm (6.6 × 9.8 ft), which has no common US retail equivalent. All of these metric sizes, including 70 × 100 cm, are on our national flags page; 70 × 100 cm is also our larger garden-flag size.

Metric flag sizes 60 x 90, 90 x 150, 120 x 180 and 150 x 240 cm drawn inside the exact 2 x 3, 3 x 5, 4 x 6 and 5 x 8 ft outlines; differences 1.0 to 3.8 cm

Why is 90 × 150 cm not exactly 3 × 5 ft?

The metric size sold as 3 × 5 ft is 1.44 cm less on the hoist (the edge at the pole) and 2.4 cm less on the fly (the length). On a pole you will not see it. You will see it when a customer measures a flag sold as “3 × 5 ft” and finds it about 1.5 cm short on one side and 2.5 cm on the other, or when a frame or display case built to the exact imperial size leaves a gap around the flag. Flags from a metric supplier and an imperial one also won’t line up exactly when they hang side by side.

Our product pages list 90 × 150 cm as the 3 × 5 ft size. If your listing needs the exact dimensions, put 91.44 × 152.4 cm on the order. If it does not, accept 90 × 150 cm in writing.

Senior Flags (Shanghai Senior Flag Manufacture Co., Ltd.) has made flags since 2003, and printing, cutting, sewing, quality control and packing are done in-house at our factory in Lu’an, Anhui. Final inspection is the last of our three quality checks (incoming materials, in-process and final); see our manufacturing capabilities.

What proportions do official and retail flags use?

Proportion is the ratio of the hoist to the fly, and whoever specifies the flag sets it. For US executive agencies, Executive Order 10834 lists eleven sizes. Eight of them work out to 1:1.9:

EO 10834 sizeHoist × fly (ft)Hoist × fly (cm)Ratio
(1)20.00 × 38.00609.6 × 1158.21:1.9

(11)1.32 × 2.5040.2 × 76.21:1.9

Sizes as listed in Executive Order 10834; centimeters converted at 30.48 cm per foot.

Most retail flags use shorter ratios: 2:3, 3:5 or 5:8. At the same 3 ft hoist, federal size (9) is 3 × 5.7 ft, or 91.44 × 173.74 cm, which is 21.3 cm longer than a retail 3 × 5 ft flag. If you sell to buyers who specify the federal proportion, put the EO size on the order.

Size (5), 5 × 9.5 ft (152.4 × 289.6 cm), is the size sold as the casket or burial flag; ushistory.org gives a casket flag as “9-1/2’x5′”. The executive order itself does not name it.

For other countries’ flags, check the proportion in that country’s official specification. If it does not match one of our standard sizes, such as 90 × 150 cm, we make the flag to that proportion as a custom size.

What size flag fits a flagpole?

The NAAMM flagpole guide recommends a maximum flag for each pole height, for example 3 × 5 ft on a 15 ft exposed pole.

No US law pairs a flag with a pole. The Flag Code (4 U.S.C. chapter 1) covers how the flag is displayed, and Executive Order 10834 covers flag sizes. Sizing guidance backed by an engineering standard comes from the pole side. ANSI/NAAMM FP 1001-07, Guide Specifications for Design of Metal Flagpoles, recommends a maximum flag size for each exposed height of a ground-set pole, and Concord American Flagpole tabulates those maximums in its wind-speed tables based on FP 1001-07 (catalog pages 90 to 92):

Exposed pole heightMaximum flag (NAAMM)Size we make
15 ft (4.6 m)3 × 5 ft90 × 150 cm
20 ft (6.1 m)4 × 6 ft120 × 180 cm

60 to 75 ft (18.3 to 22.9 m)12 × 18 ftmade to order
80 ft (24.4 m)15 × 25 ftmade to order

Maximum flag sizes from ANSI/NAAMM FP 1001-07. Heights are exposed heights above the ground.

Heights are exposed heights above the ground, and the pole itself is longer: a 20 ft exposed pole is 22 ft overall in the same tables. These are the largest flags NAAMM recommends for each height, not the size most poles fly. Many US retail size charts size the flag at about a quarter of the pole height instead (“The length of the flag should be at least 1/4 the height of the pole,” says Gettysburg Flag), which gives 3 × 5 ft on a 20 ft pole, 4 × 6 ft on 25 ft and 5 × 8 ft on 30 ft, one size below the NAAMM maximum on the shorter poles. That quarter rule is a retail convention, not an engineering figure.

The same tables give each pole build a wind-speed rating with a flag flying. The rating is for the pole, not the flag, and on the same pole a polyester flag is rated lower than a nylon one. Our flags are polyester (see what flags are made of), and we publish no wind rating for them. Two flags on one pole are rated with the maximum size on top and the next size down below it, for example 5 × 8 ft over 4 × 6 ft on a 25 ft pole. Flags of two or more nations are a different case: the Flag Code asks for separate staffs of the same height and flags of approximately equal size (4 U.S.C. §7(g)).

The rating also depends on the pole’s diameter and wall thickness. With the same 4 × 6 ft flag, the strongest 20 ft build in the tables is rated nearly three times higher than the lightest. For a flag the tables do not list, ask the pole maker, and compare any rating with the design wind speed for the site. For wall brackets, our wall-mounted flagpole kits have the pole length matched to the flag, and our outdoor flagpoles are made to the height you order.

For a pole mounted on a house wall, Gettysburg Flag recommends “a 2.5×4′ flag on a 5′ flag pole, or a 3×5′ on a 6′ pole”. Our wall-flag set pairs a 90 × 150 cm flag with a 180 cm (5.9 ft) pole.

What sizes do hand, car and garden flags come in?

Flags that are not flown from a fixed flagpole come in their own sizes, and most of them are matched to a stick, pole or stand. Sizes are written with the attached edge first: the pole or stick edge for most flags, the top sleeve for garden flags.

Feather and teardrop flags are listed with their pole size, so they have their own chart: feather flag sizes and dimensions. How the two shapes compare is in feather flag vs teardrop flag. Every product above can also be made to a custom size.

Need sizes that match exact imperial dimensions? Send the sizes in feet or inches and say whether they must be exact. We reply with the sizes we would make, the tolerance and the sample time.

How should you write flag sizes on an order?

Write each size as a finished size, attached edge first, and say whether a rounded metric size is acceptable. Each point below removes one way an order line can be misread:

  1. The unit and the finished size, for example “90 × 150 cm finished”. Ask what the finished size includes: the sleeve or heading, and the hems.
  2. The attached edge first, and named: “hoist 90 cm × fly 150 cm”, or “top sleeve 30 cm × drop 45 cm” for a garden flag. US listings put the hoist first (3 × 5 ft); some listings put the fly first (5 ft × 3 ft), so name each edge.
  3. Exact imperial or metric. Say whether 90 × 150 cm is acceptable for a 3 × 5 ft listing.
  4. The official proportion for national flags, if your buyer requires it.
  5. The size tolerance, written on the quotation.
  6. For very large flags, whether the flag is printed in one piece or joined from panels.
  7. Any sticks, poles, stands or bases, with their sizes.

Frequently asked questions

What are the dimensions of a flag?

US retail flags run from 2 × 3 ft up to 12 × 18 ft, and larger for poles over 60 ft, mostly in ratios of 2:3, 3:5 or 5:8. Most US federal sizes run at 1:1.9. For another country’s flag, check the proportion in its official specification.

What size flag should a flagpole be?

Most US retail charts put 3 × 5 ft on a 20 ft pole, about a quarter of the pole height. The engineering ceiling is higher: ANSI/NAAMM FP 1001-07 recommends no more than 4 × 6 ft on a 20 ft exposed pole. Before going larger than the listed maximum, ask the pole maker for a rating.

Should I get a 3 × 5 or a 4 × 6 flag?

On a 20 ft exposed pole, US retail charts usually pick 3 × 5 ft, and 4 × 6 ft is the NAAMM maximum. On a 25 ft pole, retail charts move up to 4 × 6 ft. Go larger only when the pole maker’s table lists that flag for your pole.

Is a 2 × 3 ft flag too small?

On an outdoor pole taller than 15 ft, yes: Concord’s tables list 2 × 3 ft only for a 15 ft pole, as the smaller of the two sizes for that height. It suits short indoor poles and hand-held sticks; our largest hand flag is 60 × 90 cm, close to 2 × 3 ft.

How big should a house flag be?

There are two kinds. For a flag on a bracket by the door, our wall-flag set pairs a 90 × 150 cm flag (sold as 3 × 5 ft) with a 180 cm pole. A decorative house flag that hangs vertically is sold as 28 × 40 in, which we make as 70 × 100 cm. Garden and house flag sizes are compared in our garden flag size chart.

What size is a standard outdoor flag?

3 × 5 ft. ushistory.org gives it as “the usual size of a flag used at home”. When you match it to a pole, note that sizing tables use exposed height: in Concord’s tables a 20 ft exposed pole is 22 ft long overall, because part of it sits in the foundation.

Is a 90 × 150 cm flag the same as a 3×5 flag?

Not exactly. A 3×5 flag measures 91.44 × 152.4 cm, so a 90 × 150 cm flag is 1.44 cm shorter at the hoist and 2.4 cm shorter on the fly. It is the metric size sold as 3×5; order 91.44 × 152.4 cm if you need the exact size.

To check a size list, send the sizes you sell in feet or centimeters through our quote form, and ask for each one as a metric production size or an exact imperial size.

Data behind the tables: our product pages as of 11 October 2026; Executive Order 10834, section 21; ANSI/NAAMM FP 1001-07 maximum flag sizes and wind ratings as tabulated in Concord American Flagpole’s catalog; 1 ft = 0.3048 m exactly.
