Print on demand (POD) flags have no minimum order and no stock risk, but each piece costs more and is made order by order.
- Bulk from a factory: lower unit cost, but cash up front, storage and a minimum order
- Senior Flags minimum: 100 pcs per design for garden flags
- The real comparison: landed cost per sellable unit, not unit price
- Break-even: depends on landed cost and how fast a design sells

From our factory
Senior Flags has made flags in Lu’an, Anhui, since 2003, and is not a print-on-demand service. Garden flags start at 100 pcs per design, and the standard 30 × 45 cm (12 × 18 in) flag ships as a set with a 1 m metal stand, 250 sets to a carton.
What do print-on-demand flags cost?
A Printful garden flag costs $8.84, and its outdoor flags run from $12.40 to $53.04, as listed in October 2026. Printful publishes its flag prices, which makes it a useful benchmark:
| Printful product | Size | Price per flag | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Garden flag | 12 × 17 in | $8.84 | Double-sided |
| Outdoor flag with rod pocket | 12 × 18, 24 × 36 or 36 × 60 in | $12.40, $24.43 or $53.04 | Listed as double-sided on the product page |
| All-over print flag | 34.5 × 56 in | $23.25 | One side printed, blank reverse |
Prices as listed on Printful’s product pages in October 2026, before shipping.
Printful lists 2-5 business days to make each order, then 3-4 business days of shipping within the US and Canada. There is no minimum. Quantity discounts apply only to the all-over print flag, from 5% at 25 units to 10% at 200, and the paid Growth plan ($24.99 a month, free for a year once annual sales reach $12K) lowers some prices further.
Other POD platforms are less transparent. Printify lists a 12 × 18 in garden and house banner from $10.49 plus shipping, while Gooten lists yard flags but shows prices only inside its seller dashboard.
Those prices are for production only. Your margin still has to cover the marketplace fee, advertising, and returns.
The middle option: bulk orders from a POD platform
Printful also sells in bulk: its bulk pricing “starts at 25 or more units of the same product”, and a product qualifies if a bulk price calculator appears on its page. You keep the platform’s sizes and fabrics but pay less per unit, which can bridge the gap between one-off POD orders and a factory minimum.
Why do POD flag sellers start looking for a factory?
The squeeze is the per-piece price. At a $10 retail price, the $8.84 Printful garden flag takes 88% of the sale before shipping, marketplace fees and advertising. Waiting days for each order to be made adds a second problem when a design starts to sell.
How should you compare print on demand with bulk flags?
Compare the POD price with the landed cost per sellable unit, not with a factory’s unit price:
Landed cost per unit = (factory price × quantity + freight + import duty + customs fees + warehouse receiving) ÷ units you expect to sell
Then add the costs bulk brings that POD does not:
- Cash tied up. You pay a deposit or the full amount up front, weeks before your first sale. At Senior Flags, bulk orders generally take a 30% T/T deposit and small orders are generally paid in full; the terms are confirmed on the quotation.
- Unsold stock. If a design stops selling, the remaining units are yours. Seasonal designs (holidays, sports seasons, garden flags in spring) carry the most risk, because anything left after the season waits a year.
- Storage and fulfillment. Someone has to store and ship the flags: you, a third-party warehouse or Amazon FBA.

Use this table with your own numbers. Ask the factory to price both quantities on one quotation, with carton counts and weights, so you can fill in the freight line:
| POD | Bulk, 100 pcs | Bulk, 500 pcs | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Production cost per flag | $8.84 (Printful garden flag) | Factory quote for 100 ÷ 100 | Factory quote for 500 ÷ 500 |
| Freight and duty per flag | Per-order shipping charge | (Freight + duty + fees) ÷ 100 | (Freight + duty + fees) ÷ 500 |
| Cash paid before first sale | $0 | Payment for 100 pcs, plus freight | Payment for 500 pcs, plus freight |
| Unsold-stock risk | None | Up to 100 unsold pcs | Up to 500 unsold pcs |
| Garden flag stand | Check the product page | 1 m metal stand included with the 30 × 45 cm flag | Same |
| Time to restock | 2-5 business days per order, plus shipping | 15-20 calendar days from artwork confirmation, plus shipping | Same |
Fill in the factory’s quotation and your own freight, duty and fees; the 100 and 500 pcs columns are examples.
When does switching to bulk flags make sense?
There is no independent break-even number. Apparel printers publish rules of thumb, such as the “Rule of 50” in Superior Ink’s guide: consider bulk once a design sells about 50 units a month. Treat figures like this as a starting point, since they come from companies that sell bulk printing.
A design is ready for bulk when three things are true:
- The design sells every week, not just in one season. Steady sales mean the stock turns over before it ages.
- You can fund the stock. If paying for 100-500 pieces up front would stop you buying ads, wait.
- The POD cost is the reason you are losing on price or margin. If listings fail for other reasons (photos, keywords, reviews), cheaper stock will not fix them.
Many sellers end up with a hybrid: bulk for the bestsellers, POD for the long tail of new or niche designs. Brandmerch’s guide also suggests pre-orders as a middle path: sell a design first, then place the batch.

What should you ask a flag factory before your first bulk order?
A flag factory should give you every specification in writing; POD platforms hide most of them. Ask for these:
- Fabric and weight. For garden flags we use double-layer 300D polyester or 300D Oxford fabric. Ask what the alternatives are and what they cost. Our flag fabric guide explains the options.
- One side or two. Garden flags are seen from both sides, so ours are usually double-sided, with single-sided printing available. For other flags, see single vs double-sided flags.
- Finishing and stand. Sleeve size, hem type, and whether a stand is included. Our standard 30 × 45 cm garden flag ships as a set with a 1 m metal stand, and the stands are also sold on their own (MOQ 100 pcs). Sizes and stand fit are compared in our garden flag size chart.
- Mixing designs. Can the MOQ be split across several designs? At Senior Flags it cannot: the MOQ applies to each design, so garden flags start at 100 pcs per design. List each design and its quantity in your first enquiry.
- Packaging and labeling. List every label, bag and carton marking you need before the factory quotes. At Senior Flags, label and packing requirements are reviewed as part of the order, and the quotation records the exact configuration.
- A physical sample. Ask for one before bulk. Our production time is counted from artwork confirmation, so ask how approving a sample first changes the bulk date.
- Timing. Sample 5-7 calendar days and production 15-20 calendar days, both from artwork confirmation, then shipping. Plan restocks before you run out, not after. Details in custom flag MOQ and lead times.

Print on demand vs bulk for Amazon FBA sellers
Build Amazon’s prep rules into the factory specification, because Amazon has stopped offering prep and item labeling in the US since 1 January 2026. Under its packaging rules, textiles must be bagged in sealed polybags at least 1.5 mil thick, with a suffocation warning on any bag whose opening is 5 in or more. Each unit also needs a scannable unit label, usually an FNSKU barcode. Send these requirements with your enquiry so the factory can confirm in writing which of them it can meet, and agree the delivery arrangement with your forwarder.
What mistakes do sellers make when moving from POD to bulk?
Two of the most common mistakes are ordering every design at once and leaving freight out of the price.
- Ordering every design at once. Start with the one or two that already sell, at the minimum quantity.
- Ignoring freight in the price. On light goods like flags, carton size and weight decide the freight bill. Ask for packing details on the quote.
- Skipping the sample. POD lets you test by ordering one unit. In bulk, the sample is your only test before you own 100 pieces.
- Forgetting the season. A design that sells in spring needs to be ordered in winter. Production plus shipping takes weeks.

Do you offer print on demand or dropshipping?
No. Senior Flags is a factory. Orders start at the product MOQ, for example 100 pcs for garden flags, and ship in cartons to you or your warehouse.
What is the minimum order for custom garden flags?
100 pcs at Senior Flags. The standard 30 × 45 cm flag ships as a set with a 1 m metal stand. Sampling takes 5-7 calendar days and production 15-20 calendar days, both counted from artwork confirmation and excluding shipping.
How much cheaper are bulk flags than POD?
It depends on size, fabric, quantity and freight. Compare the POD price with your landed cost per unit, worked out from a written factory quote, not with the factory price alone.
Is a POD flag double-sided?
It depends on the product. On Printful, the garden flag is double-sided, while the all-over print flag is printed on one side with a blank reverse. Check the product page before you list a design.
Can bulk flags go straight to Amazon FBA?
Only if they arrive prepped to Amazon’s rules: bagged, labeled and packed as Amazon requires. Amazon no longer preps or labels items itself in the US, so write its rules into the order specification and ask the factory to confirm in writing which prep steps it can do.
Can I keep using POD after switching to bulk?
Yes. Many sellers keep POD for new and slow-selling designs and use bulk stock for their best sellers.
Prices were read on the Printful and Printify product pages in October 2026 and change often; check them before you compare.
